How Do I Get My Face Blurred in Google Reviews
Why does Google Street View blur some faces but not others?
Google Street View launched in Canada with much fanfare last week and, like many people, I was hooked by the power to zoom down to a street-level view in many cities in Canada.
And while Google says it blurs out both faces and license plates in its Street View shots, I — similar many people — didn't have to use the service for long earlier coming beyond some unblurred faces.
That got me wondering why Google blurred some faces and not others. That's when my friend Blake helpfully suggested on Twitter that the answer might be in ane of my ain blog posts from last week on the face up-recognition technology in one of Google's other pop programs, Picasa.
As I explained in that post, while I idea the potential of confront recognition in Picasa was kind of neat, in practice it was mighty frustrating as it oftentimes failed to identify sure faces altogether.
Ane of the other weird quirks of Picasa which I didn't mention in that original post is that, in addition to missing some faces, the program likewise incorrectly flagged several non-faces equally faces, almost hilariously a traditional Danish nuptials cake.
I tin can only assume that Picasa somehow idea the 2 chocolate hearts were optics and that the top of the block was the bridge of the nose.
Which got me thinking that whatever engineering science Google uses to identify faces must be based on some type of geometry — that two dots spaced a sure distance from another dot equals a confront. Whether those dots actually equal a face is across the brains of Google's megacomputers, I imagine.
This guess on my role is actually backed up by the fact that other observers accept noted that face illustrations — like Colonel Sanders on KFC signs — have also been blurred by Street View.
What do you think of Google Street View? Do yous retrieve information technology's an invasion of privacy? How have you lot used it so far? Postal service a comment and let me know.
Finally, if you've gotten this far and don't know how to access Street View, just load up Google Maps and — if street view is available for your city — just elevate the little xanthous man onto the expanse you want to examine.
